America’s Moms Are Watching U.S. Senate: Pass the Safe Chemicals Act!

Thursday is a big — and long overdue — day. And American moms, like me, will be tuned in and watching.

Usually, hearings in Congress get little attention from the general public, let alone busy moms. But this Thursday is a big day for those of us who care about protecting American families from toxic chemicals.

The U.S. Senate will be holding a hearing on “The Safe Chemicals Act,” a bill sponsored by Senator Frank Lautenberg (D-NJ). The bill, a much-needed overhaul of our antiquated laws, will help us all protect our families from toxic chemicals.

I just gave birth to my second child, and I can tell you that there is no stronger instinct for a mom then wanting to protect her kids and keep them safe. My children have changed my life in wonderful ways. They’ve brought me tremendous joy. They’ve also made me conscious of every product I buy, from toys to mattresses to cleaning products. I hope that the decisions I make will shield my children from harm. Yet today, it’s impossible to be sure. As parents, we just don’t have the information we need to keep our kids safe from toxic chemicals in many household products.

Many moms and dads believe that our government is making sure there aren’t toxic chemicals in our products. And for a long time, I thought the same thing.

However, nothing could be further from the truth. It is still legal to use lead, mercury, asbestos and formaldehyde in many common household products. Even worse, there are thousands of other chemicals in use that have never been tested for safety at all!

We require all kinds of companies to make sure that their products are safe before they’re sold, from food to pharmaceuticals to pickup trucks. And yet there is no requirement that the chemicals used in consumer products be tested for safety, even if they’re used in products made for children.

Would you give your child medicine that hadn’t been tested to make sure it was safe?

Parents are often shocked to find out that there are dangerous chemicals in their child’s plastic baby bottles, toys, baby soap, shower curtains, and even in their crib mattresses. And that’s just the tip of the iceberg.

That’s why parents are demanding action from Congress now. That’s why we need the Safe Chemicals Act.

I am hopeful that members of both parties will see this as an issue of basic common sense — for the health of their kids and grandkids and those of their constituents. I believe they will do the right thing. And I am encouraged by bipartisan efforts to make progress on this issue. Senator James Inhofe of Oklahoma, the lead Republican on the committee hearing this bill, has joined with Senator Lautenberg to seek common ground on this issue.

I hope the companies that make chemicals and household products will step up, too, and become partners in passing this important legislation. The Safe Chemicals Act will enhance their brands and their businesses, and, most importantly, serve their customers well — especially their tiniest ones.

Moms (and dads!) across the country are busy people. They are trying to raise their kids and support their families. But on Thursday, lots of us moms will be watching online on behalf of parents across the country.

Every kid has the right to be safe in her home. Every mom has the right to know that the products she buys for her child are free of toxic chemicals.

We have hope and faith in our political system to fix this problem, and we are counting on our U.S. Senators to get it done. For the sake of our kids, do not let us down.

For more information and to join the campaign go to the Safer Chemicals, Healthy Families website www.saferchemicals.org or Facebook page. Click here to call your U.S. Senator today and ask them to support The Safe Chemicals Act of 2011.

Finally after 3-years of waiting ‘An Invisible Sign‘ staring Jessica Alba, Bailee Madison and J.K. Simmons is available on Region 1 DVD & Blue-Ray yesterday (Released November 1st). I bought my copy for $11.99 on Amazon yesterday, and I shall post a review + screencaptures ones i receive it. Below is a summary of the content of the DVD via Houston Press.

The Set-up: Jessica Alba is Mona, a 20-year-old math whiz who’s somewhat adrift. Her father’s been mentally ill for years and Mona’s way of coping with that has been making deals with the universe. She’ll give up her favorite things and in exchange the universe will give her back her healthy, happy dad. The only thing Mona hasn’t given up is math. When her mother (played beautifully by Sonia Braga) forces her to leave home, Mona gets a job teaching math at an elementary school where she meets a handsome co-worker (Chris Messina).

The Execution: Alba, usually the sexy, sultry beauty plays the geeky, shy Mona to perfection. In baggy, unfashionable clothes, wearing bangs that badly need trimming, she’s still a magnet on screen. Alba doesn’t take a single misstep on her journey from socially clueless outcast to blossoming, creative young woman.

The Verdict: Alba is charming as the awkward Mona. With a less-is-more attitude in her approach to the character, Alba brings Mona to life slowly, carefully and wonderfully. This is a small, quiet movie that holds its own.

The Extras: None.

It was in 2005 that Robert Rodriguez and Frank Miller’s first Sin City feature film hit theaters and, for the intervening six-plus years, rumors have persisted of development on a big-screen sequel. At this year’s San Diego Comic-Con, Rodriguez announced that a script was ready and that the project could go before cameras before the year’s end.

Today, MTV has an update from Miller, who says that some tinkering is still being done on the script and a more realistic start date would be the spring of 2012. Already heavily rumored, Miller also confirms that the character of Nancy Callahan (played by Jessica Alba in the original) will again make an appearance, as will Marv (originally played by Mickey Rourke).

“‘Sin City’ number two is primarily an adaptation of the book ‘A Dame to Kill For’,” Miller reiterated, then adding: “It also features the short story, ‘Just Another Saturday Night’ and two new stories. One involving Jessica Alba’s character, Nancy Callahan, that I came up with for the movie in order to tie things together and make it be more united with the first.”

Callahan is also featured in “A Dame to Kill For” and, with Alba’s recent appearance in Rodriguez’s Spy Kids 4: All the Time in the World, another teaming with the director isn’t surprising (although still not fully confirmed). What is a bit more of a twist is the inclusion of “Just Another Saturday Night”, a Marv-centered story that originally ran in “Sin City #1/2″. The timeline of it runs concurrently with “That Yellow Bastard” (adapted in the first film). Marv also appears in “Dame” but there has, for years, been fan speculation that the story might have removed the character due to Rourke’s announced reluctance to return to the role. Whether the actor’s thoughts have changed or whether the part might be recast remains to be seen.

For those keeping score, a shot-for-shot adaptation of “Dame” would also include parts for Gail (Rosario Dawson), Miho (Devon Aoki) and Manute (Michael Clarke Duncan). The story’s lead is the character of Dwight McCarthy who, though played by Clive Owen in the original, is supposed to have undergone significant facial reconstructive surgery between the events of “Dame” and “The Big Fat Kill”.

At SDCC, Rodriguez also revealed the title of one of the new stories as “The Long Bad Night”, meaning that, unless things have changed, there’s just one title left to be revealed as part of the new film (coming soon).

Jessica Alba is suing a weight loss company for more than $1 million in damages for allegedly using her likeness to promote their product.

The actress has taken legal action against the makers of Belly Bandit – an aid which is said to help women lose their post-pregnancy weight -for using her image without permission to boost sales of the product.

Her legal team also claim the product’s packaging carried her name stating it was “Jessica Alba’s #2 Secret for a Fast Post Pregnancy Slimdown!”

The lawsuit also accuses the company of prominently featuring her name and photograph “under the Celebrity Testimonials section of their website”.

Since legal action was taken Jessica’s picture no longer appears on the web page where stars including Kourtney Kardashian and Minnie Driver give statements praising the product.

According to TMZ.com, the 30-year-old screen beauty – who has two daughters, three-year-old Honor Marie and two-month-old Haven Garner, with her husband Cash Warren – is also seeking a percentage of the company’s profits as well as the damages.

Since giving birth to Haven, Jessica has revealed she has adhered to a regimented 45 minutes a day exercise regime and has calorie-controlled meals delivered to her home

She previously said: “I have a hard time with portion control, so I have 1200 calorie meals delivered. But I also work out, so basically I’m starving – it sucks. I drink a lot of water … I’m working out every day, even just for 45 minutes is good for my mental state. “Getting dressed and actually doing it is the worst. It’s hard to get motivated.” (NZ Herald).

THERE is often a brief spell of domestic chaos following a new arrival, but when Jessica Alba and Cash Warren invite us into their LA home, we’re greeted by a scene of near zen-like calm.
Here the couple introduce six-week-old Haven Garner Warren, younger sister to daughter Honor (3).

And Jessica Alba and Cash – who met eight years ago on the set of Fantastic Four – chat to us about Haven’s unusual birth, living in a female-dominated household, and keeping their romance alive.

“When Haven was born, I fell in love all over again,” says Cash.

“It’s the most incredible experience.”

“Love at first sight,” says Jessica.

“It did take a couple of days for it to sink in that I have another baby!”

And while Cash loves his burgeoning family of girls, the situation does have one slight downside.

“There are lots of strong women around,” says Jessica.

“If there’s any discussion, Cash doesn’t win. Girls have the majority vote here!” (OK! UK).

Facebook Tweet Jessica Alba and husband Cash Warren have added another little girl their brood: baby Haven Garner Warren.

“She was born on Saturday, weighed 7 lbs. and was 19 inches long,” Alba wrote on her official Facebook page, announcing the happy news. “Healthy and happy! Big sister Honor couldn’t be more excited about the new addition to our family.”

“Thank you for all of your support during my pregnancy,” the post continued. “It means the world to me.”

Daughter Haven joins big sister Honor, 3.

Alba first announced her latest pregnancy via Facebook and Twitter in February. Shortly afterward, both she and Warren shared their happiness online as well.

“Can’t tell you how much the positive tweets mean,” Warren wrote on his Twitter at the time. “Smiles from ear to ear. lots of love back at cha.”

Alba, 30, added via her account at the time: “I can’t thank you enough for all of the wonderful messages you sent me today.”

CONGRATULATIONS!

Jessica Alba got her first big break in Hollywood when she was just a tender thirteen years old, starring in the Disney flick “Camp Nowhere.” Her husband Cash Warren also works in the entertainment industry as a film producer. But the pregnant Alba absolutely does not want her daughter Honor Marie, 3, nor her future offspring, to follow her child star footsteps.

“I was a child actor and it worked for me, given the circumstances I was in, but I’m lucky enough to give my daughter and my second baby a completely different life and an education that I never had the opportunity to have,” Alba told FOX411′s Pop Tarts while promoting her forthcoming family film, “Spy Kids: 4D,” which hits theaters August 19. “When they’re done with college, if they want to get into the arts, that’s fine. I think you will be a better artist the more life experience you have, but I wouldn’t encourage them to work in this type of environment as children.”

Alba said part of the appeal in getting onboard Robert Rodriguez’s “Spy Kids” franchise was being able to make a film that she could actually allow her daughter to watch.

“I was definitely excited [about doing] a movie that my daughter can see, for sure. That definitely inspired me to do this movie in particular,” she continued. “But it’s not like I only want to do family and kids movies from now on. It’s just nice to have one that my daughter can watch.”

Alba’s character Marissa attempts to balance her roles as a secret service agent and a stepmom, but so far, in real life, the work/life balance hasn’t been Alba’s forte.

“It’s hard. On the weekends is when my husband and I make a concerted effort to just not email or text, but really spend our time with our daughter and be completely, 100 percent focused on her,” Alba said. “During the week, it’s here and there, depending on if I am busy with meetings or not. It’s a little bit different now, because she’s in school. It is tough, because I do care about my career. I do have that, but she’s my number one priority. If she’s not doing okay, nothing matters.”

And as she awaits baby number two, Alba is feeling a little more accustomed to her ballooning belly and the ins and outs of pregnancy.

“It’s not as scary or daunting. It’s definitely less uncomfortable,” Alba said. “There’s nothing bizarre about what I crave. It’s watermelon, really. I could have watermelon at any moment.”

And as she expands her family, Alba is also focused on expanding her empire.

“I’m working on developing a TV show and a movie idea. I’m also working on a baby brand,” Alba revealed. “I’m used to working on sets almost 12 months out of the year; I did that for 10 years. Now that I have free time, I’m expanding into different areas.”

There is however still one on-screen childhood dream Alba has yet to fulfill.

“I lived in my head a lot as a kid, which is probably why I wanted to be an actor. I was sick a lot, in the hospital by myself,” she added. “I spent a lot of time wanting to be Superman. That was one of my obsessions.”

A female Superman? That one may take a few more meetings. (Fox News)
